Best laptops for programming, Coding, and developers

There are hundreds of laptops out there in the market. Finding the best laptop in this vast sea of laptops can be a little complicated. Especially if you are an engineering student. As engineering is not a single entity it is made up of multiple streams. Like a computer science engineering student differs from a civil engineering student so is their laptop usage.

Although there is not that drastic difference but still suitability matters and it’s more about choosing the right laptop rather than choosing the best. Since a laptop is one of those gadgets that cannot be purchased frequently so you need a capable machine that will fulfil your needs for a longer-term. So before jumping right on the laptops, there are things that you must think and analyse.

The below article will show you the list of laptops that are good for programmers and coders. We recommend laptops based on the customer rating, specs and their value for money. The below list of the best laptops for computer science students provides you with the complete information about the laptops which are good for freelance programming projects or your university computer science projects.

Since every programmer, coder or a computer science graduate needs are different from one another based on their budget or programming language platform, it is quite difficult to recommend  the best laptop for programming, but not impossible.

Taking into consideration programming languages, budget, operating system and other miscellaneous requirements, each coder or programmer has a different need. Based on these criterias we have created a list of best laptops for software engineers in 2020, which is shown below.

Please, do keep in mind that programming in itself is a wide area which is very difficult to define easily and even more difficult to find a laptop which suits your needs perfectly. Below laptops are well optimized for programming and developers that can run any programming language packages and developer tools like: Android SDK, Anaconda for PYTHON, Xcode for MacOS and many more.

The below laptops for software development or programming do meet the minimum requirements needed to run development packages without any complications. All of the laptops in this review do have a set of tools that meet the minimum requirement needed for development environments and come fitted with essential hardware, so that any developer can use these machines according to their personal needs.

Also, You will not find many laptop brands marketing their laptops as a programming or a coding laptop, instead most of them do have an exclusive line for their gaming customers. So, in order to select a good laptop for programming and computer science engineers, we must look for the following criteria:

  • What is your Budget?
  • Project Complexities and development platform.
  • Your programming level, that is, beginner, intermediate, advanced.
  • What Operating system do you need to use?
  • Excessive use of some resource, RAM, Hard disk, screen size, graphics card.

In the below article you’ll find a list and reviews of some of the best coding and programming laptops for computer science students and freelance developers. We’ve listed several best rated products to consider in this Best Laptops to Program and code list:

Things to Consider before Buying a Laptop

Before buying a laptop there are some important things that you must consider. It is not all about buying a laptop with the latest processor. There are multiple factors that need to be looked at. You need a perfect balance among four of the major things that are processing power, multitasking, decent battery, and affordable price.

Power:

The first thing that comes is the power or we can also take it as a performance factor. Since engineering students should be running heavy and complex programs like AutoCAD. You need hardware that has enough power to run those software’s without any hiccups. In short, better the processor and better the performance. That is why in some cases it is good to buy a gaming laptop.

Multitasking:

Now apart from running those high-end software programs, your system should have enough memory to hold those programs. When you use heavy software it resides in the temporary memory called RAM. So it should be able to multitask and navigate smoothly and easily. In short, you need hardware with a capable RAM.

Battery:

Apart from the processors and RAM, you need a system that is capable enough to provide a decent screen on time. As you use those heavy programs it consumes a lot more battery than normal day to day usage. So considering a system with decent enough battery backup is also of paramount importance.

Budget:

Last but not least is the budget, buying a laptop that does not eat up your entire money is really important. As you have to make a balance between the budget and suitable hardware specifications. So choose a laptop that satisfies both your needs and your budget.

Best Laptops for developers and coding students

Now that you have gone through all the things that you want, choosing the best one for you will not be that complicated. Ultimate Buying Guide 2020 for Perfect Laptops for Programmers of All Levels

For coding and app development I personally use a MacBook Air and a HP i5 laptop with 8GB RAM, 256 GB SSD and an integrated graphics card. MacBook Air does the good job with Xcode related developments and the HP, which is a windows laptop is also excellent.

My HP i5 laptop is excellent while doing coding and works like a charm. It did come with a factory HDD but I replaced it with a Crucial 256GB SSD, increasing its speed to at least fivefold. So, if you have a laptop that came with a traditional hard drive and is slowing down, then I do recommend replacing your factory HDD with a faster SSD. And, it surely does change the complexion of how your laptop renders and executes your applications and softwares.

After changing my HP laptop’s HDD to SSD which is used as a daily driver for my android app development and python programming projects, I can also play games like CS GO and Call of Duty on low to medium settings without any lag. It does get a bit louder after an hour of gameplay if you throttle it at higher settings but it is still doing well after 4 years of rigorous usage.

From creating infographics, designing websites to playing games both Apple MacBook pro and Windows laptop allows me to do all of those things with ease. If you want to  get good years from your laptop, then you should consider a laptop or a notebook with optimal performance. You should also look for a combination of performance, power, customer care and build quality.

The real problem is selecting a laptop from a hundred available options. While most laptops are good for programmers and developers but may not be the best suitable option for you. Also, if you are on a certain budget, then it might be more difficult for you to select the best laptop for programming which is most suitable for your needs.

What to look for in a laptop for programming

One of the most overlooked components is the storage, also the most important. Most of the newest or modern laptops do come equipped with a SSD which is much faster than a standard hard drive, but some low budget laptops do come with a traditional HDD, at all cost, to avoid buying those.

SSD’s are faster and safer than HDD’s. They perform better and have faster read and write speeds which substantially increases the performance of your laptop. So, a laptop with SSD storage is a must for any laptop to be called as a good laptop for computer science students.

For programming or app developments, a laptop with 256GB of SSD storage is more than enough. If you have some spare bucks then you can even go for a 1TB SSD which in fact would significantly improve the performance of your programs and applications.

Rendering, debugging and running applications or softwares is an essential part of every programmer and developer which creates a lot of files and folders. Thus, speed and performance are extremely important, because you have to run and close various files and folders in a very short span of time.

With an SSD, you are getting speed and can access information very efficiently than HDD’s. Thus, it is always better to go for an SSD laptop over an HDD storage laptop.

Memory or RAM

The next important thing is RAM or memory of your laptop, Which works with your laptop’s har drive. It is very important for your laptop as it stores the information that your computer needs to function. Applications and programs store their instruction in RAM when programming or doing any coding task, so it is very important to have a laptop with optimal RAM storage.

After completing a coding or a programming task, you will run or debug that app and that’s where the RAM plays its part. The computer will use RAM to store instructions that tell the program what to do next.

Choosing the best RAM to program

Selecting the size of memory is very important as it is an integral part of your laptop. More memory or RAM in a laptop means, more memory allocation to different programs at the same time. This means that you can run several under-developed programs and application SDK’s at the same time without any lagging. So, in simple language more memory means that your laptop will run smoothly and as a computer science student or a programmer you will not face any lagging or laptop freezing problems.

So the minimum recommended amount of RAM for a good programming laptop is about 8GB DDR4. Anything above that range would be considered an excellent upgrade and anything below the recommended amount is a strong no.

You should also know that there are different types of RAM: DDR4, DDR3, and DDR1. DDR4 is significantly faster than others and nearly all of the new laptops come fitted with DDR4 RAM.

Processing power

A CPU or a processor is the brain of your laptop. And for a laptop to be called a good laptop for coders or developers the brain must be a good one and a new one too. The processor of a laptop handles millions of bits of information, and is the busiest part of the laptop.
