Micro-ATX vs Mini-ITX vs ATX: What’s the Difference?

In most of the cases, people choose Micro ATX. You can also choose ATX for 4 PCIe slots and Mini ITX for the most compact PC.

In the past days, Micro ATX motherboard was the smallest in size among all others but with the change of time and change in technology It get replaced with many latest motherboards such as : ITX, Mini ITX etc. Now, ATX motherboard comes with a standard size in PC. Here, we will provide some basic information that will help you to distinguish among the E-ATX, ATX, micro ATX, ITX or mini ITX etc.

atx vs micro atx vs mini itx

First of all, We talk about the E-ATX plates. These plates are the largest among all and their dimensions are – 300 mm x 330 mm per plate. They are used for the x299 and x399 chipsets. They have 8 DIMM slots and occupy much capacity for various expansion cards.

Secondly, We talk about ATX plates also known as the standard size motherboard plates. Before some years, these plates were the smallest motherboard plates among all but now they come under the standard size.

Measurements of ATX plates – 305 mm x 244 mm . These plates have 4 DIMM slots and max. space for at least two graphics cards.

At third number, We have micro ATX boards whose dimensions are – 244 mm x 244 mm per plate. They also come in a mini ATX variant of dimensions 284 mm x 208 mm. These micro ATX plates are the second smallest plates among all the motherboard plates. These micro ATX boards are in heavy demand in the market and are mostly used in the Compact PC.

At the end,  We have ITX or mini ITX boards which are the smallest plates among all other motherboard plates for desktop PCs. The most Compact PCs among all have ITX boards. These mini ITX plates have the size of 170 mm x 170 mm. These plates perform better than ATX plates.

Micro-ATX vs Mini-ITX vs ATX: Size Comparison

Let’s Compare the size of all motherboards i.e from the biggest E-ATX to the smallest mini ITX. Biggest difference between micro-ATX (mATX), mini-ITX, and standard ATX motherboards are their dimensions:

E-ATX : 12.0 inch x 12.0 inch

Standard ATX: 12.0 inch x 9.6 inch

Micro-ATX: 9.6 inch x 9.6 inch

Mini-ITX: 6.7 inch x 6.7 inch

We can clearly observe that E-ATX plates have the same length as Standard ATX plates i.e 12 inch. But have different widths.

Also, Standard ATX and micro ATX plates are of the same Width i.e 9.6 inch but are different in length.

But Mini-ITX motherboards are smaller in both length and width than all other motherboards. These motherboards perform much better than all other motherboards and these are the latest one also.

All motherboards are good. It depends upon your choice that what you want. If you want a small sized gaming computer or PC then you can go with small ITX boards but if you want large ones then you can go with any one of motherboards for your gaming PC. But one thing you should keep in mind is that you can not adjust micro ATX or standard ATX motherboards in those places which are suitable for only ITX boards.

The Pros and Cons of Each Form-Factor

Sometimes you question yourself. ” Why would I want any other motherboard if I have the ATX motherboard and case ? If ATX is really better then what is the need of others ?”

Here is its Simple Answer, You need other ones because everything changes with the change of time and you need to go with the time. You have to choose the latest product if you want to compete with others.

Here, We are Showing some features and limitations of all the motherboards.

ATXIt is best for overclocking
It performs aesthetic features smoothly.
There are Several numbers of PCIe lanes.
They have high RAM capacity.
High Cost.
Not suitable for smaller cases due to large size.
Micro-ATXIt costs too low so that all can own it.
Maintains balance in single-GPU setup.
Fitable size for many cases.
It has higher RAM capacity than ITX.
It can’t perform  multi-GPU setups.
It is not suitable for  extreme overclocking.
 It can’t perform better aesthetics.
Mini-ITXLatest version for smaller cases.
It performs Better aesthetics features than micro-ATX.
It is expensive than micro-ATX
It can not fit in the large cases
It is not suitable for multi-GPU setups.
It is not fit for extreme overclocking
It has only two RAM slots.

Which gives more advantages at the time of assembly

This feature directly goes in the favour of ITX motherboard because it is very easy to mount a mini PC.

On the other hand, we will need a tower for micro ATX to do that but mini ITX has its own chassis. It is another thing that mini ITX has little space but we can play them anywhere.Apart from this ITX can mount 120mm cooling systems. We recommend to go with the mini ITX and then place it inside a big tower.

Summary and which one to use in each case

Lets see a quick Summary of all to clarify the remaining doubts about motherboards.

Mini ITX board

It is the smallest and latest motherboard with a little space. It comes with an ITX chassis that decorates the room and has a good design in terms of cooling. Also, It has in-built Wi-Fi.

In order to mount multimedia in the PC, we need powerful processors. So, they come with high-end chipsets having the ability to install a graphics card.

Micro ATX board

We can go with the micro ATX motherboard if we want a medium plate for a medium sized tower. But never  buy a micro ATX to mount it on an ATX tower. Also, there are powerful gaming boards of this format that come with Wi-Fi and support several GPUs.

What does a micro-ATX motherboard offer us compared to ATX motherboards

Most of the market towers are compatible with micro-ATX boards . Therefore, They don’t have to face problems while changing the motherboard. Moreover, There will be an advantage in transition from ATX to micro-ATX due to larger space which helps us to achieve a better organization within it.

Size issue is the biggest between ATX and micro-ATX. If we reject the micro-ATX tower, then our space will get reduced. If you want to occupy a less space then micro ATX motherboards are the best choice for you under the same performance.

Requirement of all users is not the same. One can not make out the best motherboard. It all depends upon the user. That, How he wants to use the PC.

All motherboards have their own Specs and are used for different-different purposes.
